1ESPRI

Egyptian Smoking Prevention Research Institute

ESPRI  is an institute created  to carry out smoking prevention research in Egypt .  By enhancing policy setting and research on tobacco related issues, ESPRI's research will enable the National Tobacco Control Program to take the necessary steps to make Egypt a tobacco free country.

Vision:
ESPRI's overall goal is to reduce tobacco use in
Egypt by carrying out interlocking observational, intervention and policy research, and through capacity building for research, prevention, communications and policy on smoking prevention will be carried out.

Background:

In September, 2002, the University of Maryland in Baltimore (UMB) was awarded a 5 year grant to assist Egypt in its efforts to improve tobacco prevention and research activities. There are three major partners involved in this project, namely UMB, Georgetown University (GU) and Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP). Since the Co-Principal Investigator, Dr. Mostafa K. Kamal is from Ain Shams University , we have been able to draw on the resources from Ain Shams also.

Since NIH funds primarily research, the initial activities proposed primarily involve research from molecular epidemiology aspects to prevention projects in a rural setting. Feedback was received from the MOHP before submitting the grant to NIH. We are pleased that we received the maximum funding given to any agency under this grant.

Aim 4: Conduct Intervention Research to reduce smoking and environmental tobacco smoke in villages.

Aim 5: Build Capacity and strengthen infrastructure by both long-term and short-term training for professionals in tobacco control research, public policy, and laboratory knowledge and skills, and by facilitating networks of governmental and non-governmental (NGO) organizations
