Abstract
A national survey of hepatitis C, smoking , diabetes and
high blood pressure prevalence was carried out . Out of 9561 participants, 30 %
of males and 1% of females reported current smoking.
The prevalence of smoking among males increased rapidly with
age to peak at 54.5% in the age group 50-60 with an average of 47% above 20
years. Above the age of 20, 32% of males smoke cigarettes, 12.1% smoke water
pipe and 2.5% smoke both. The median smoking duration was 16.3 years for
cigarettes and 14.8 years for waterpipe.
For smoking females above 20, the median smoking duration
was 8.7 years for cigarette and 17.5 years for waterpipe. 7.2% of females and
8.3% of males below 40 years of age and 22% of males and 29.3% of females above
40 were found to have high blood pressure. 8.3% below 40 years of age and 24%
above 40 years of age were unaware of their high blood pressure
Having high blood pressure and also not being aware of
it were both not associated with smoking status. 6% of all adults above 20 years
(6.6% of males and 6.2% in females) reported being diabetics. This rate was much
higher (13%) above the age of 40 than among those below 40 (1.3%) but not
related to smoking status.
